Massive Beef Manufacturer Food Recall Expands to More States
The Rancho Feeding Corp issued a food recall for beef products processed from “diseased and unsound animals,” which were mostly slaughtered and processed in 2013. The original food recall covered 40,000 pounds of meat, then expanded to 8.7 million pounds of beef and other meat products, including hamburger and hotdogs sold at Costco and Walmart, as well as Nestle products like Hot Pockets.
Now, the USDA believes that the potentially dangerous beef could have reached 35 states as well as Guam.
“The retail list has been growing as more customers have been notified,” USDA spokesman Adam Tarr told CNN Friday. “The list could expand.”
The USDA has not received any reports of illness related to ingesting the unsound beef, but the food recall is still Class I, which is the most serious type of food recall the USDA can issue.
Products covered in the food recall were produced and shipped between January 1, 2013, and January 7, 2014. The USDA mark of inspection on them has “EST. 527″ and their case code number ends in 3 or 4.
A spokesperson from the Food Safety and Inspection Service, part of the USDA, said that stores must contact the agency once they had investigated their beef and processed meat supplies in order to be taken off the list.
The USDA is conducting an ongoing investigation into Rancho Feeding Corp’s practices, and the California plant has been shut down.
Defective Products Can Lead to Health or Food Recalls
Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products, whether broken bones from a car accident, or a serious illness from a food-borne pathogen. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, food recalls, and other defective products such as toys, cars and automotive parts.
There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:
- Defective manufacturing
- Inadequate testing
- Food-borne pathogens
- Design defects
- Marketing Misrepresentation
Consumers that have been harmed by defective products such as drugs, medical devices, improperly-sealed food, or other products, may be eligible to receive legal remedies.
