Multistate e. Coli Outbreak Linked to Food Recall

Ground Beef Under Food Recall Linked to Multistate e. Coli Outbreak

food recallOn Monday, May 19th, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced that they would work with other US public health officials across many states, as well as the US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS), to investigate a multistate outbreak of e. Coli, which has been traced back to a food recall for ground beef.

The likely source of e. Coli, according to the CDC, is about 1.8 million pounds of ground beef under food recall from the Wolverine Packing Co. of Detroit, MI.

The CDC stated that consumers must be careful not to consume undercooked beef at this time.

So far, 11 individuals have been infected with e. Coli. Michigan had the most illnesses, with 5 people diagnosed with e. Coli. All of those infected said that they had begun to see symptoms between April 22nd and May 2nd. The USDA said that the ground beef under the food recall was processed between March 31st and April 18th.

The food recall covers ground beef sold to both restaurants and retail outlets, bearing the establishment number “EST.2574B” with a production date code marked “Packing Nos:MM DD 14” between “03 31 14” and “04 18 14.”

One person was also recently sickened with e. Coli in Massachusetts; one other patient was diagnosed in Missouri, and four patients have e. Coli in Ohio.

The food recall and e. Coli infections come after another massive food recall involving beef from the Rancho Feeding Corp, in Petaluma, CA. Inspectors found that the company had used cows “unfit for human food,” which were often riddled with eye cancer, as their main source of beef.

That food recall covers 8.7 million pounds of meat, and has affected 5,800 stores across 45 states as well as Washington DC, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

Defective Products Can Lead to Health or Food Recalls

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products, whether broken bones from a car accident, or a serious illness from a food-borne pathogen. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, food recalls, and other defective products such as toys, cars and automotive parts.

There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:

  • Defective manufacturing
  • Inadequate testing
  • Food-borne pathogens
  • Design defects
  • Marketing Misrepresentation

Consumers that have been harmed by defective products such as drugs, medical devices, improperly-sealed food, or other products, may be eligible to receive legal remedies.
