University of Iowa Faces Personal Injury Lawsuit in California Court

Woman Files Personal Injury Lawsuit Against University of Iowa in California Court

university of iowapersonal injury lawsuit filed in California against the University of Iowa has so far cost the university thousands of dollars in legal fees, and it does not look like that will end soon.

In February 2013, Cynthia Wong filed a personal injury lawsuit against the University of Iowa after chemicals shipped from the university injured her face and eyes. Wong worked at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, which performs clinical trials on various drugs. One of Wong’s job duties was to unpack boxes of trial drugs shipped from various places across the country, and on March 3, 2011, she unpacked a box from the University of Iowa that emitted a vapor. The personal injury claim alleges that the vapor left Wong with injuries on her face and in her eyes. Injuries to her eyes, which are permanent, include corneal abrasions, which can cause inflammation, tears, blurred vision, and redness, making vision difficult.

“She suffered a real injury from a real physical substance that came out of that box,” Wong’s attorney said.

UI Pharmaceuticals, which shipped the box, said that the vials of sodium chlorite inside were destined for Neuraltus Pharmaceuticals, Inc, and would be used to develop a treatment for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Sharp Corp processed the package, and is a company that routinely provides packaging services for the pharmaceutical industry. Wong’s personal injury lawsuit claims that safety defects in the packaging process caused her injuries; she claims that the package should have contained safety warnings about possible injuries so she could have made “an intelligent decision regarding whether to unpack” the box.

Wong seeks unspecified damages for medical costs and lost wages.
