Subaru Brake Rust Recall

Subaru Brake Rust Recall Covers 660,000 Cars

Subaru brake rust recallSubaru has issued two vehicle recalls earlier this month. The first major Subaru recall covers 660,238 cars for potential brake line rust.

The Subaru brake rust recall covers over 660,000 2009-2013 Forester, the 2008-2011 Impreza and the 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI, the 2005-2009 Outback and the 2005-2009 Legacy, the NHTSA said, and are found in cold-weather states – Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C.

Those states typically use salt to melt ice on the roads in the winter, according to reports. Water can splash on the fuel tank protector and the fuel lines, causing the area to rust. The rusted areas can leak brake fluid; when the car has no more brake fluid available, the brakes will stop working, leading to a possible accident.

Subaru stated that they issued the vehicle recall as a precaution and there have been no accidents or injuries related to the brake rust problem.

Cars impacted by the Subaru brake rust recall should be taken to a Subaru dealership.  Dealers will replace the brake line if they notice a problem, and will also apply a special anti-corrosion wax.

Takata Airbags Lead to Subaru Vehicle Recall

A smaller vehicle recall was announced for Subaru vehicles that have faulty Takata-brand airbags.

On Monday, June 30th, Takata announced that it had sold faulty airbags to Subaru, another vehicle manufacturer in a long list that will now have to recall certain models because the airbags may not inflate properly.

Subaru issued a vehicle recall for 8,500 2003-2004 model year Legacy, Outback, and Baja vehicles, which may have the faulty airbags in them.

Other vehicle manufacturers affected by the Takata airbags are Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Ford, Chrysler, and BMW. According to the manufacturer, the airbags have improperly-prepared propellant, which can cause too much pressure and then ignite, which can rupture the metal casing around the airbag. The explosion can cause metal shrapnel to fly out of the airbag area, injuring drivers and passengers.
