Listeria Death Initiates Food Recall for Cheese

Cheese Under Food Recall After Listeria Outbreak Leads to One Death

ListeriaA cheese manufacturer based in Delaware has issued a food recall for several varieties of Hispanic-style cheese after a listeria outbreak led to one death and several illnesses.

Roos Foods issued the food recall after learning about one death related to a listeria outbreak caused by its cheeses.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say that all seven of the consumers who fell ill with listeria reported eating the cheese. Three of those that caught listeria were newborns. It is unclear if the one listeria-related death was a newborn.

The listeriosis cases were diagnosed between August 1st and November 27th of last year.

Listeria can cause a potentially fatal infection in those with compromised immune systems such as older adults, pregnant women, and young children. People with stronger immune systems could experience symptoms such as headache, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Listeria can pass to the fetus in pregnant women, causing miscarriage. According to the CDC, there were 1,651 cases of listeriosis nationally between 2009 and 2011 – the infection was fatal in 21% of the reported cases.

The cheeses under food recall were distributed to Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The seven consumers who became ill with listeria were all in Maryland, and strangely, the one death was in California.

The food recall includes the following brands:

  • Mexicana: Cuajada En Terron, Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacera, Cuajada Fresca, Queso Fresca Round, Queso Dura Viejo hard cheeses.
  • Amigo: Cuajada En Terron, Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacera, Cuajada Fresca, Queso Fresca Round, Queso Dura Viejo hard cheeses.
  • Santa Rosa De Lima: Cuajada En Terron, Cuajada/Cuajadita Cacera, Cuajada Fresca, Queso Fresca Round, Queso Dura Viejo hard cheeses.
  • Anita: Queso Fresco.

A spokeswoman for Roos said that the company has stopped production of its cheeses, in accordance with FDA regulations, to determine the cause of the problem.
