GM Issues Another Vehicle Recall for Electrical Problems

Latest GM Vehicle Recall Covers 1.5 Million Cars for Power Steering Problems

vehicle recallOn Monday, March 31st, GM announced yet another vehicle recall, this time covering 1.5 million vehicles worldwide for problems with the electrical power steering.

The automotive manufacturer has issued vehicle recalls covering 6.26 million cars since just February of this year.

“If power steering assist is lost, a message displays on the Driver Information Center and a chime sounds to inform the driver. Steering control can be maintained because the vehicle will revert to manual steering, but greater driver effort would be required at low vehicle speeds, which could increase the risk of a crash,” GM said in a statement.

Out of the 1.5 million cars under the latest vehicle recall, around 1.3 million of them are in the United States.

Three of the six models under vehicle recall are also tied to the massive ignition switch vehicle recall that GM began in February. That recall is being investigated by the federal government because it covers cars from model years 2004 and 2005, indicating that GM possibly delayed the vehicle recall for as much as 10 years, leading to at least 31 complaints of injury and 13 deaths in automobile accidents.

GM currently faces not only a federal investigation, but personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits that could become a class action, and a shareholder lawsuit.

Car models under GM’s latest vehicle recall include:

— Chevrolet Malibu from the 2004-2005 model years, plus some 2006, 2008 and 2009 model-year cars.

— Chevrolet Malibu Maxx from the 2004-2005 model years, plus some 2006 model-year cars.

— Chevrolet HHR from the 2009-2010 model years (non-turbocharged only).

— Some Chevrolet Cobalts from the 2010 model year.

— Some Saturn Auras from the 2008-2009 model years.

— Saturn Ion from the 2004-2007 model years.

— Pontiac G6 from the 2005 model year, plus some cars from the 2006, 2008 and 2009 model years.

— Service parts installed into certain vehicles before May 31, 2010, under a previous recall

GM says that there have been no reports of deaths related to the latest vehicle recall. The company is still investigating potential accidents or injuries caused by the electrical power steering problem.

“With these safety recalls and lifetime warranties, we are going after every car that might have this problem, and we are going to make it right,” said Jeff Boyer, vice president of GM Global Vehicle Safety. “We have recalled some of these vehicles before for the same issue and offered extended warranties on others, but we did not do enough.”
