YoBaby Yogurt Cups Under Food Recall Due to Potential Coliform Contamination
Organic yogurt maker Stonyfield has issued a voluntary food recall for its YoBaby Peach/Pear flavored yogurt cups due to a potential coliform contamination.
The 4 oz 6-pack cups were stamped with the date code June 5, 2014, and were shipped to Target retail outlets in Alabama, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, along with Walmart stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware. Affected yogurts that fall under the food recall were available for sale on or after April 23rd.
The company issued the food recall after internal testing of the yogurt produced a potential coliform contamination stemming from its Londonderry plant. The child-specific yogurt is the only product from Stonyfield that has been affected by the potential coliform contamination.
“Our first priority has always been and always will be the welfare of our consumers,” says Esteve Torrens, Stonyfield CEO. “While we continue to investigate this issue and believe that the risk of injury is extremely remote, we feel that this voluntary measure is the prudent and responsible step at this time.”
Consumers with yogurts that fall under the food recall are encouraged to return unopened yogurt containers to the retailer for a refund.
“At the time of the recall, we had not received any complaints of illness or any other concerns from our customers or consumers, and very few products made it to store shelves,” Torrens said in a letter to customers posted on the company’s website. “We chose to call back the product as a precautionary step.”
Coliform contamination covers several types of bacteria including Escherichia coli (E. coli), which live in the digestive tracts of most mammals. Symptoms of coliform infection include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting, and sometimes excessive gas, bloating, loss of appetite and malaise are some of the other common symptoms of this infection.
Food Recall and Defective Product Lawyers at the Strom Law Firm
There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:
- Defective manufacturing
- Inadequate testing
- Food-borne pathogens
- Design defects
- Marketing Misrepresentation
Many manufacturers do their best to produce high-quality food, medical, and recreational equipment. However, some companies do not pay close enough attention to the manufacturing process, and can release products on the market that cause great personal injury. While the FDA and USDA issue product and food recalls on a regular basis, they do not always catch defects in time to prevent consumers from coming to harm, especially in food-borne outbreaks such as listeria, e. Coli, and salmonella. It is important to hold manufacturers to a higher standard, and a defective products lawyer can help when a food recall has not been issued in time. The Columbia, South Carolina-based attorneys at the Strom Law Firm are licensed to practice in South Carolina, Georgia, and New York, to help you with your personal injury or defective product claim.
