DePuy ASR Hip System, Hip Implant Recall

On August 30, 2010, I posted an article titled “Johnson and Johnson Hip Implant Failure Rate Prompts Recall.” This article discussed Johnson and Johnson”s recall of the DePuy ASR Hip System, also known as the ASR XL Acetabular System.

People with the ASR XL Acetabular hip replacement implant have experienced problems such as swelling, pain, and difficulty walking. The device can generate metal debris or particles which dislodge from the implant and travel into the bloodstream of unsuspecting patients.

The failure rate of the ASR XL  Acetabular System has forced a large number of patients to undergo a second hip replacement procedure, known as a revision surgery.  According to the Wall Street Journal, as , which is troubling given that many implant patients may not even experience any symptoms alerting them that there is a problem.

We are now aware of a letter that has been sent to patients with the DePuy ASR Hip System advising them of the recall and requesting that they be evaluated by their doctor.

The letter typicalls comes from the patient”s treating orthopedic and indicates that the patient should discuss any problems or symptoms that he or she is having with their doctor. The letter further notes that the doctor will explain any additional testing that the patient should have and the best solution for further treatment and testing.

Of note, the letter indicates that DePuy will pay for the medical examination and any medical follow up listed in an “Information for Patients” sheet which should accompany the letter.

As noted in my previous article, there are side effects to the revision surgery recommended by DePuy. Even if  DePuy covers the “reasonable and customary” costs of a revision surgery, consumers should be forewarned.

Revision surgeries are technically more difficult, take longer to perform, place you at risk of higher complications,  and take longer to recover from.  In addition, any type of surgery places you at risk for infection, complications, or even risk of death.
