Two Organic Food Recalls for Salmonella and Listeria

Organic Eggs Under Food Recall Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

food recallSixdogs Investments, LLC, has issued a voluntary food recall for some containers of organic eggs due to a possible salmonella contamination.

Routine testing of the organic eggs showed that some eggs may be contaminated with salmonella. The company said that it has not received any reports of illnesses related to the food recall.

“We are confident that any and all products sent out with any other packing codes or expiration dates are fully safe for consumption,” the company said in a statement, and continued to note that, “No illnesses have been reported to date.”

The eggs were distributed primarily in Colorado, but some eggs may have been shipped to Idaho, Kansas, New Mexico, and Utah. The products in question will have a packing date of 93, 94, 97, or 98; an expiration date of “051814”, “051914”, “052214”, or “052314;” they will also include a location code of 1 or 3.

Salmonella is one of the most common food-borne illnesses, and in healthy adults can last between 4 and 7 days. Most cases clear up on their own without treatment, but salmonella infections can be serious or fatal in young children, elderly adults, or people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella can experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Dehydration is a potentially fatal side effect, and in rare instances, salmonella can enter the blood steam and cause heart infection or arthritis.

Organic Mangoes Under Food Recall Due to Potential Listeria Contamination

food recallSan Francisco-based Pacific Organic Produce has issued a voluntary food recall for several cases of organic mangoes because the fruit potentially came in contact with Listeria monocytogenes.

The mangos affected by the food recall are marked with a Purity Organic brand and sold between April 14, and May 2, 2014. Suspect cases will contain PLU numbers 94051 & 94959, and distributed to retailers in Colorado, California, Arizona, Texas, and New Jersey.

Like the food recall for organic eggs, the fruit tested positive for listeria in a routine test, and the company said that there have been no reports of illness due to eating the mangoes.

Listeria can cause a potentially fatal infection in those with compromised immune systems such as older adults, pregnant women, and young children. People with stronger immune systems could experience symptoms such as headache, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Listeria can pass to the fetus in pregnant women, causing miscarriage. According to the CDC, there were 1,651 cases of listeriosis nationally between 2009 and 2011 – the infection was fatal in 21% of the reported cases.
