South Carolina Considers Banning Alcoholic Energy Drinks

The State House of Representatives of South Carolina is now considering a bill which if passed, will ban the production and sale of alcohol-laced energy drinks in the state.

Last November, federal authorities sent warning letters to the manufacturers of Four Loko and other similarly concocted drinks. That same month, nine Central Washington University students were hospitalized after drinking Four Loko. The findings of these agencies found that the combination of alcohol and caffeine is dangerous, often leading to the condition of those inebriated to be “wide-awake drunk.”

A House panel unanimously approved the bill which will be sent to the House Judiciary Committee. The major provisions in the proposed legislation include  the prohibition of the sale and distribution of beverages such as Four Loko and Joose. The 32 ounce drinks, which contain between nine and twelve percent, have sparked controversy across the United States.

If the current bill becomes law, those found violating the law may be subject to a fine between $100 and $500 and imprisonment between thirty days to six months. Violators will also lose their right to sell alcohol for the next two years.
