Ford Vehicle Recalls Issued Covering 101,000 Cars
Six separate Ford vehicle recalls issued on Tuesday, July 8th, covering a total of 101,000 cars.
Most of the Ford Motors Co. cars fall under one vehicle recall, which covers 92,000 Taurus, Flex, Police Interceptor, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT models from 2013 and 2014, as well as Ford Edges from 2012-2014, and model year 2014 Lincoln MKX’s.
The vehicles have a faulty assembly that can cause a “loss of drive function,” which means the cars have a higher roll-away risk when placed in “park” without the emergency brake being activated.
The other vehicle recalls are much smaller and more specific. One covers 2,100 vehicles manufactured at the Louisville Assembly Plant between October 15th and October 22nd, 2013, and only involves 2014 model Ford Escapes. The plant allegedly used a band bonding agent on the glass roofs of the vehicles which could lead to shaking, noisy roof glass as well as leaks. Another vehicle recall involves only 197 model year 2014 Ford Fiestas, whose fuel tanks may be missing an adhesive layer that could lead to a fuel leak and is a fire hazard.
The remaining Ford vehicle recalls cover commercial vehicles: 5,264 model year 2011-2014 Ford F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles could have electrical junction problems that could lead to short-circuiting of the electrical system on salted roads; 635 model year 2014 Ford F53 Motorhome Stripped Chassis, as well as F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles may have a problem with the brake calipers; and 368 model year 2014 Ford Transit Connect vans may have a labeling issue on the brake fluid reservoir cap, but the only affected models are in Puerto Rico.
However, Ford has issued many additional vehicle recalls over the course of the year. These six additional vehicle recalls bring their total number of recalled cars up to 3 million. While the number is not as shockingly large as General Motors, which topped the list of huge vehicle recalls this year at 20 million for just an ignition switch problem, Ford is still not immune to the large number of vehicle recalls in the United States this year. Although the year is only half gone, the US has seen more vehicle recalls in 2014 than any other year, topping 37.5 million cars. The year already tops 2004, which previously held the record for most vehicle recalls at 30.8 million cars.
