Major Retailers of Nut Butters Under Food Recall for Salmonella

On Tuesday, August 19th, the Food and Drug Administration announced that peanut butter and almond butter are under food recall for salmonella, due to a possible salmonella contagion.

Major retailers like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are pulling the all-natural nut butters from manufacturer nSPIRED Natural Foods. The producer issued the voluntary food recall after receiving notification from the USDA.

Other brands affected by the food recall were Arrowhead Mills and MaraNatha, which were sold through Kroger and Safeway as well as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. The USDA found potential salmonella contamination through routine testing, although the company has also received reports of four salmonella illnesses.

The use-by dates on the nut butters under food recall for salmonella range from December 4th, 2014, and July 21st, 2015.

Salmonella is one of the most common food-borne illnesses, and in healthy adults can last between 4 and 7 days. Most cases clear up on their own without treatment, but salmonella infections can be serious or fatal in young children, elderly adults, or people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people infected with salmonella can experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Dehydration is a potentially fatal side effect, and in rare instances, salmonella can enter the blood steam and cause heart infection or arthritis.

This is one of numerous salmonella outbreaks in the past year, including food recalls for chia seed powder, Foster Farms chicken, and infected peanuts.
