Judge issues preliminary ruling on Toyota lawsuits

On Wednesday a federal judge heard arguments on a motion to dismiss several causes of action in 51 lawsuits filed against Toyota. The judge issued a preliminary opinion on the matter denying Toyota’s motion.

According to the Yahoo News:

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed since the Japanese automaker start[ed] recalling millions of vehicles because of sudden-acceleration problems in several models and brake defenses with the Prius hybrid.

Toyota claims its electronic throttle control system is safe and that it will prove so in court.

The AP further reported that:

  • 10 million vehicles have been recalled by Toyota over the past year
  • 3,000 reports of sudden acceleration from Toyota drivers over the last decade
  • 93 deaths associated with sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles

The judge has been appointed to hear the personal injury lawsuits as well as the economic class action regarding the alleged diminished value of Toyota vehicles due to the sudden acceleration issue.
