Honda’s Vehicle Recall Covers Thousands of Cars that Feature Takata Airbags
Takata’s airbags have led to numerous vehicle recalls recently, covering over 16 million cars worldwide. Honda’s models under the vehicle recall are CR-V, Civic, Brio and Amaze, model years 2012-2015, which are mostly sold in the Asian market. However, other vehicles in the recall are in Europe, Latin America, and Africa. Honda’s vehicle recall does not, so far, cover any cars in North America.
Takata’s driver’s side airbag, used in the Honda vehicles, has a part in the inflator assembly that is faulty, which means the airbag will not inflate properly. Honda discovered the problem with its airbags after General Motors issued a vehicle recall for 33,000 cars and trucks in June, primarily in North America.
That same month, Honda issued recalls for vehicles in North America with Takata Airbags, as did Mazda, Toyota, and Nissan.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has requested seven major automotive manufacturers to issue recalls due to Takata airbags, which can fail particularly in areas with high humidity such as Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the Virgin Islands, so consumers should expect this latest Honda vehicle recall to expand.
Takata is one of the three largest producers of airbags in the world, which means that their airbags can be found in almost any manufacturer’s vehicles. According to regulators, the airbags can rupture and injure passengers, not only with an explosion of hot air, but with shrapnel from the exploding pieces.
Takata has dealt with more than 12 million cars under vehicle recall in the past 5 years, due to defective Takata airbags. The company has even been part of two wrongful death lawsuit settlements after exploding airbags killed two people in 2009 model year Hondas.
