Dyson Issues Product Recall for Portable Heaters

Dyson’s Product Recall Issued Due to Potential Fire Hazard

product recallDyson has issued a product recall for 393,000 portable electric heaters due to a potential fire hazard.

Reportedly, the portable heaters can develop an electric short and overheat, which can melt some of the parts on the heaters or start a fire. Dyson stated that the company knows of 82 incidents worldwide in which the heaters shorted, including four reports of heaters that caught fire and had burned or melted internal parts. However, no injuries or property damage aside from the faulty heater have been reported.

About 338,000 of the heaters under product recall are in the US; the remaining 55,000 are in Canada.

Dyson’s product recall includes Dyson Hot heaters and Dyson Hot+Cool heaters with model number AM04 and all Dyson Hot+Cool heaters with model number AM05. The heaters stand about 23 inches tall, with a round base, and an upper body like an elongated ring. They are made from plastic and have no fan blades. The product recall covers models sold between September 2011 and March 2014. The heaters sold for around $399.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the heaters and unplug them. Dyson has offered to repair the heaters for free as part of the product recall.

“We will fix, clean, service and return all Dyson heaters to owners, complete with a new two year parts and labor warranty, free of charge,” CEO Max Conze said in a statement.

Defective Product Recalls and Personal Injury in South Carolina

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products, and improper or delayed product recalls. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety, such as issuing product recalls in a timely fashion. Although any product could be subject to a recall due to improper testing, some of the most common product recalls are for automobiles and automotive parts, drugs and medical devices, and children’s toys. There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products have been recalled because they are defective or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue product recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers.
