Food Recall for Listeria Contamination in Dole Salads

On Friday, March 14th, Giant Food Stores issued a food recall for Dole brand salads due to a potential listeria contamination.

The food recall covers Dole Italian Blend Salad Mix and Dole Fresh Vegetables.

Giant Foods says that consumers should check their salad or vegetable bags for a Sell By date of March 12th. Anyone who has Dole brand salads or vegetables with that date should immediately throw out the salads.

The salads under food recall were distributed in 15 US states and three Canadian provinces, including Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

Listeria can cause a potentially fatal infection in those with compromised immune systems such as older adults, pregnant women, and young children. People with stronger immune systems could experience symptoms such as headache, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Listeria can pass to the fetus in pregnant women, causing miscarriage. According to the CDC, there were 1,651 cases of listeriosis nationally between 2009 and 2011 – the infection was fatal in 21% of the reported cases.
