Black & Decker Settles for $960,000

The Maryland based Power Tool Company Black & Decker said they will pay $960,000 to settle a claim that it did not report a defective weed trimmer.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulators say Black & Decker “knowingly failed to report several safety defects and hazards and withheld information, relating to its Grasshog XP product.  The agency said this occured while they were investigating reports of the injury.

158 people were injured between 2005 and 2009.

The CPSC says Black & Decker knew the Grasshog was defective in May 2006.  They closed an early investigation based in incomplete data they were given from the company.

Black & Decker did not provide complete information “about the mounting numbers of incidents and injuries”  until October of that year.

By July 2007, when the trimmer was recalled, there had been over 700 reported incidents and approximately 60 injuries, according to CPSC data.

The devices spool and spool cap could come loose becoming projectiles.  Other injuries can occur from the item overheating and burning consumers.

The trimmer was sold from November 2005 through 2007 for approximately $70.  Consumers can Call Black & Decker for a free repair kit
