Georgia Firm Issues Food Recall for Chicken Nuggets
A company in Georgia has issued a food recall for 15,000 lbs of chicken nuggets after consumers complained about finding plastic pieces inside.
The US Department of Agriculture reports that Perdue has issued a food recall for chicken nuggets under the brand name “APPLE GATE naturals,” with establishment number “P2617” and the “BEST BEFORE” date of “02/05/15.” The product was shipped on February 5, 2014 to nationwide retailers.
Perdue and the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service stated that there have been no reports of illness, injury, or death related to the chicken nuggets, but consumers did contact the company to complain about pieces of foreign particulate matter – specifically, plastic pieces.
Applegate and Perdue issued the food recall to grocery stores and retailers on August 8th, but because the product is frozen and fully-cooked, the company said that some consumers may still have the chicken nuggets in their freezer.
Earlier this year, food giant Tyson issued a food recall for the same problem in their chicken nuggets. The pieces of plastic found in Tyson chicken nuggets did not lead to illness or death, but reportedly caused minor oral injuries. The USDA traced the plastic pieces back to a product scraper inside a blending machine.
Defective Products Can Lead to Health or Food Recalls
Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products, whether broken bones from a car accident, or a serious illness from a food-borne pathogen. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, food recalls, and other defective products such as toys, cars and automotive parts.
Under products liability law, it’s the injured party’s burden to prove that the product was defective. Therefore, it is important that the product be inspected by one or more qualified experts to determine the exact nature of the defect and whether that defect caused the harm suffered. If the product is not recovered, the customer may be left with no proof that the product was defective.
There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:
- Defective manufacturing
- Inadequate testing
- Food-borne pathogens
- Design defects
- Marketing Misrepresentation
Consumers that have been harmed by defective products such as drugs, medical devices, improperly-sealed food, or other products, may be eligible to receive legal remedies.
