Great Value Chicken Soup Recalled

According to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service,  Bay Valley Foods, LLC, has recalled approximately 188,181 pounds of Reduced Sodium Chicken Noodle Soup sold in 10.5 oz cans and labeled "GREAT VALUE REDUCED SODIUM CHICKEN NOODLE CONDENSED SOUP".   While the product label indicates that the can contains Chicken Noodle Soup, the affected cans may also contain Cream of Chicken Soup and therefore milk, a known allergen which is not otherwise disclosed on the packaging. Good Samaritan Killed in Accident on I-77

Wltx is reporting that the victim killed in a wreck, which occurred shortly after 12:00 AM Wednesday morning on I-77 near mile marker 4, is Allen V. Garner. Mr. Garner, who was reportedly hit from behind, had gotten out of his car to check on the other driver involved in the accident when he was struck by several other vehicles traveling down I-77.  According to the report, a total of six vehicles were involved in the wreck and the incident is still under investigation.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. … [Read more...]

Cleveland Park Train Accident a Preventable Tragedy

On Saturday, March 19, 2011, a miniature train at Cleveland Park in Spartanburg, South Carolina was carrying 20 passengers when it derailed and overturned into a creek.   Six year old Benjamin Easler was killed and 12 others were injured as a result of the catastrophic accident.  This  tragic train accident should have been prevented.  Just three days earlier, on March 16, 2011, LLR inspector Donnie Carrigan both inspected and issued a permit to Cleveland Park which allowed them to operate the train and carry passengers. A copy of his report … [Read more...]

FDA Investigates Seizures Tied to Fluzone Vaccine

Federal officials are investigating the prevalence of fever-related seizures in children who received the Fluzone  flu shot. The confirmed to the Associated Press that there have been thirty-six confirmed reports of children between the ages of six months to two years of age who suffered seizures after receiving the Fluzone flu shot. All 36 suffered febral seizures within one day of receiving the Fluzone vaccine, the only flu shot recommended for infants and toddlers in the United States. South Carolina Considers Banning Alcoholic Energy Drinks

The State House of Representatives of South Carolina is now considering a bill which if passed, will ban the production and sale of alcohol-laced energy drinks in the state. Last November, federal authorities sent warning letters to the manufacturers of Four Loko and other similarly concocted drinks. That same month, nine Central Washington University students were hospitalized after drinking Four Loko. New Blood Test May Be Able to Detect a Single Cancer Cell

According to CNN, the Massachusetts General Hospital has partnered with Johnson and Johnson to help in the fight against cancer. These two medical giants are working to develop a blood test that may be able to find a single cancer cell in a person’s bloodstream.  In a company statement, Johnson and Johnson researchers have devised a testing kit for oncologists to diagnose the presence of cancer cells and determine how much it has spread in the patient’s body. Denture Creams Cause Zinc Poisoning

An August 2008 report of the journal “Neurology” illustrated the cases of four individuals who suffered from neuropathy and symptoms of zinc poisoning and copper deficiency. The study identified that the excess use of dental creams as the cause for zinc poisoning. The researchers were from Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and they found these four individuals had used at least two tubes of denture cream a week, where the normal usage should be a tube of cream for three to ten weeks. One of the most popular oral contraception pills in the U.S. market is Yaz, with reported sales of $616 million in 2007 alone. The active ingredients of the drug is estrogen and progestin and is considered a low dose pill as it contains only 0.035 milligrams or less of estrogen. Ski Lift at Maine Resort Derails, Injures Several

A ski lift at a Maine resort derailed on Tuesday, causing six skiers to fall 30 feet to the ground and injuring several others. According to Yahoo News, the ski lift was owned and operated by Sugarloaf Resort in Carrabassett Valley. Authorities speculate that strong winds caused a cable to snap. Approximately 220 people were on the ski lift at the time of the incident. It took rescue workers two hours to safely lower all of the skiers off of the lift to the ground. Army Reservist Pulls Newberry Deputy from Burning Car

WISTV reported that an Army reservist rescued a Newberry county deputy from a burning car in Silversteet on Wednesday. According to the report, the accident occurred at approximately 8:15 am when the deputy was patrolling near Highway 34 and 121. Something caused the deputy’s car to run off the road. He hit a tree, and the impact caused a fire. Lucky for the deputy, an Army reservist was driving by and saw the car in flames.
