Trampolines are a usually a source of entertainment and fun for children, but sometimes they are more dangerous than they seem.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, trampolines cause more than 100,000 injuries a year. Most of these injuries happen to children under the age of 18 and occur right in your own backyard.
The Today Show recently ran a story showing the dangers of trampolines. It involved one young child who broke his leg in two places on the trampoline.
Trampoline injuries are becoming more and more common with over 800,000 trampolines being sold each year.
Most injuries involve cuts, sprains and fractures. Unfortunately, more serious ones do occur including fractures to the head and spine, which can result in paralysis or death. Homeowners insurance typically does not cover trampoline injuries and parents should get additional insurance if they own a trampoline.
Trampoline lawsuits are common, with one suit settling for over $14 million in 2010.
The Today Show provided some tips for trampoline safety:
- Do not let the trampoline sink or seep into the ground, as this can cause an uneven jumping surface
- Never allow more than one person on the trampoline at a time
- Always have supervision for children
- Keep enclosures closed, in order to prevent strangulation or exiting of the trampoline
- Maintain the trampoline; especially pay attention to the springs, which can become rusted or broken
