Portable Pool Safety Tips for a Safe Summer

Preventing Accidental Drowning in South Carolina

As the weather gets warmer and your children get antsy, the first thing you may do is set up a portable pool in your backyard for your children to play in and stay cool.  Cheap, transportable, and a source of good entertainment, portable pools are attractive to families as a convenient form of summer fun.  As a follow up to our recent article regarding avoiding drowning related accidents,  it’s important to remember that even though portable pools are more shallow than in-ground pools and appear to be harmless, it’s still important to practice pool safety.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received an average of 35 reports of deaths of children under the age of 5 in portable pools each year.

Follow these easy safety tips to have fun safely in your portable pool this summer:

•Empty smaller portable pools after every use to prevent toddlers from wandering back outside and accidentally falling in.
•Cover, or remove the ladder from larger portable pools after use in case a curious child decides tries to get back in.
•Keep life jackets close by just like any other pool. Drowning is often a silent killer and a few feet of water can be just as dangerous as the deep end at your local pool.
•If you have smaller children, install door alarms or child proof gate locks. This is a simple way of making sure you know the pool is off limits.
