App for Smart Phones Could Decrease Texting and Driving Problems

While larger cities in South Carolina are looking at texting and driving bans and how to enforce such legislation, one mobile developer has offered a solution: an app that limits texting and driving.

Life Solutions has created an app called TextLimit, a first-of-its-kind texting app that empowers subscribers to remotely inhibit text messaging and other features on the phone while behind the wheel. The texting and driving app was designed for concerned parents, who want to keep their teenage drivers safe, and employers, who want to keep employees safe and limit personal injury and workers compensation lawsuits.

“Distracted driving has become one of the biggest issues on the roads today. Despite passing laws making the activity of texting and driving illegal, accidents involving injuries and fatalities are still on the rise. Our app, Textlimit stops the practice of distracted driving. Every parent with a teen driver or company with employees on the road should be using this new technology,” says Mobile Life Solutions Chief Executive Officer David Meers.

The texting and driving app is available for iPhone through Apple App store, Android through the Google Play store, and Blackberry through Blackberry World. The Windows Phone version is currently in development.

“Limiting employees ability to text and drive is rapidly becoming a serious workplace issue as lawsuit payouts have skyrocketed due to accidents of workers while texting and driving … We’ve gone from monitoring what our kids are watching on TV at home to making sure they are not sending a short text that could cause harm to themselves or someone else while driving. There’s only way to do that, with the new TextLimit application,” added Meers.

“You know kids and employees are going to succumb to the temptation of using their phones while driving. It’s up to the parent or employer to stop them before something terrible happens.” When asked why he put the time and money into the development of TextLimit? “I was the worst offender and my daughters encouraged me to do something to stop texting and driving.”

Many states are considering, or have passed, bans on texting and driving. However, Life Solutions is not the only group that has decided to use mobile phone apps to deter or prevent texting and driving.

Iowa Also Considers Mobile Solution to Texting and Driving Problems

The Iowa Department of Transportation is creating an app called TXT L8R, which is still in its early stages, but could help parents train their young drivers not to text and drive.

“Distracted driving is a high cause of crashes in younger individuals, in teen drivers. And it’s one of the highest causes of fatal crashes in teen drivers,” said Dakin Schultz, Iowa DOT.

The app would cost an undetermined price for most buyers, but through Iowa DOT, it would be free to parents of 14-17 year olds, an age group most at risk of texting and driving.

“With that app, the parents will have a portal where they can monitor some of the driving behaviors of their teenage drivers,” said Schultz.
