Listeria Food RecallThe Wawona Packaging Company has expanded its voluntary Listeria food recall for stone fruits to more retail grocery stores after learning that the potentially listeria-contaminated fruit was shipped to more places.

No cases of listeria contamination have been linked to the stone fruit – including plums, peaches, and nectarines – but company president Brent Smittcamp said that consumers should definitely discard the fruit, not wash it, as a precaution.

“By taking the precautionary step of recalling product, we will minimize even the slightest risk to public health,” Smittcamp said.

The fruit under the Listeria food recall was packed and shipped to Wholefoods, Trader Joe’s, Costco, BJ’s Wholesale, and Sam’s Club between June 1st and July 12th. However, Wawona added that it sold the fruit to wholesalers as well, who then repackaged and sold the fruit to other retailers, so the fruit may be in other stores nationally.

“That is why it is hard to give a list of all the stores,” said Lisa Watson, a spokesperson for the company. “And again, because it went to wholesalers it potentially could have gone all over the country.”

Listeria can cause a potentially fatal infection in those with compromised immune systems such as older adults, pregnant women, and young children. People with stronger immune systems could experience symptoms such as headache, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Listeria can pass to the fetus in pregnant women, causing miscarriage. According to the CDC, there were 1,651 cases of listeriosis nationally between 2009 and 2011 – the infection was fatal in 21% of the reported cases.
