A 17-year-old Charlotte boy was stuck by a Taser outside a Food Lion in northeast Charlotte in March of 2008, resulting in the boy’s death.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who struck him violated department policy by shocking the teenager for approximately 37 seconds.
It was later recognized in court that Taser International Inc. failed to provide sufficient product information to its customers, including the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department, who was unaware that potential heart problems could occur if struck near the hear.
The jury ordered Taser International Inc. to pay $10 million to the victim’s family.
