Food Recall for Trader Joe’s Hummus

Trader Joe’s Issues Food Recall for Hummus Due to Listeria

food recallOn Thursday, May 22nd, a food recall was issued for hummus sold at Trader Joe’s and Target stores across the country, due to a potential listeria contamination. Listeria ingestion can cause food poisoning.

Symptoms of food poisoning include:

  • fever
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • abdominal cramps

Food poisoning is typically not serious, and most people typically recover within a few days.  However, in some instances, serious complications can arise.

Hot Mama’s Foods, based in Massachusetts, issued a voluntary food recall for the dips after a potential listeria contamination was discovered during a routine food safety test of Target Archer Farms Traditional Hummus by the Texas Department of Health.

Some of the hummus under the food recall was shipped nationally.  The product was packaged in 10-ounce and 2-pound containers, with a use-by date of June 11. Also shipped were 8-ounce containers of Trader Joe’s Edamame Hummus with use-by dates of April 28, April 29, and May 14.

Hot Mamas is urging any consumer with their brands of hummus to return the containers to their local Trader Joe’s or Target for a full refund. So far, there are no reported illnesses or deaths related to the listeria contamination, so the food recall is currently voluntary.

The food recall covers 14,860 pounds of hummus.

Listeria can cause a potentially fatal infection in those with compromised immune systems such as older adults, pregnant women, and young children. According to the CDC, there were 1,651 cases of listeriosis nationally between 2009 and 2011 – the infection was fatal in 21% of the reported cases.

Defective Products Can Lead to Health or Food Recalls

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products, whether broken bones from a car accident, or a serious illness from a food-borne pathogen. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, food recalls, and other defective products such as toys, cars and automotive parts.

There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:

  • Defective manufacturing
  • Inadequate testing
  • Food-borne pathogens
  • Design defects
  • Marketing Misrepresentation

Consumers that have been harmed by defective products such as drugs, medical devices, improperly-sealed food, or other products, may be eligible to receive legal remedies.
