Traumatic Brain Injury: The Invisible Injury
Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are not like other injuries. Unfortunately, because many of the symptoms of “mild” to “moderate” traumatic brain injury go unnoticed; many severe injuries are not detected. The injury commonly avoids detection on hospital imaging equipment, including the emergency room.
Even a mild TBI – classified as loss of consciousness or confusion/disorientation lasting less than 30 minutes – can have long-standing aftereffects. While MRI and CAT scans are often normal, the patient may experience headache, difficulty thinking, memory problems, attention deficits, mood swings and frustration, among other symptoms, for weeks or even months after the injury. Repeated mild TBI occurring over months or years can cause cumulative neurological and cognitive deficits. If repeated over a short period of time (hours, days or weeks), they can be catastrophic, even fatal.
Due to the undetectable symptoms of the injury, victims of traumatic brain injuries only rarely receive the correct care or treatment. Typically, victims’ early medical charts do not mention “head injury” or “cognitive impairment”. It is only later, if lucky, that a health care professional finds the victims” injury and treatment finally ensues. This could be detrimental and sometimes deadly to patients.
Victims of TBI are not able to process information at normal rates of speed. Accurate judgment becomes extremely difficult. Communication is oftentimes barely audible, and the ability to conform behavior is impaired. Violent behavior may result because of frustration and inability to respond in a expected manner. Headaches are very prevalent, and other senses like smell and taste can be affected. Memory and recall are often times deeply affected as well.
Many times victims are alone and unable to diagnose or resolve the injury. This silent problem is slowly affecting hundreds of thousands of people across the nation.
