Fosamax and Femur Fractures

Fosamax Attorneys

The popular drug Fosamax is usually prescribed for patients who need to reduce bone fractures and build up bone mass.

However the drug which is used to treat osteoporosis has been linked to a serious bone disease.

Fosamax is a bisphosphonate produced by the company Merck. Many reports have linked Fosamax to sudden femur fractures, the majority of which happened during low-energy activities, such as walking down stairs.

The drug has also been proven to cause osteonecrosis (ONJ) of the jaw, or “dead jaw.” Osteonecrosis is a slow demise of bone tissue that occurs because of poor blood supply to the bone.

The bone deterioration can be extremely painful and the symptoms include: mouth swelling, loosening of teeth and exposed bone.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says patients who have undergone chemotherapy, taken the medication intravenously, have a history of cancer, Paget’s disease or osteoporosis, use steroids while on medicine or have a history of major dental work are at an increased risk for ONJ. Other side effects include a risk of severe stomach ulcers when used in conjunction with Naproxen.
