Actos and Bladder Cancer

Actos Lawsuit

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers that the popular diabetes drug Actos (pioglitazone) may increase the risk of bladder cancer when used for more than one year.

The FDA’s warning comes five days after Germany and France pulled the drug from the market, expressing similar concerns.

The oral diabetes medication is used to control type-2 diabetes in patients whose condition is not sufficiently controlled by diet and exercise alone. Actos made by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company and co-marketed in the United States by Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals.

It works by lowering blood glucose levels and increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin.

The new warning is based on FDA’s review of information from a current study, which found that Actos heightened the risk of bladder cancer among patients taking the drug over a long period of time at the highest dosage.

Currently, the FDA is advising doctors not to use Actos in patients with bladder cancer and to use it carefully in patients who have had bladder cancer. Patients should talk to their doctor about any concerns they might have.

Possible signs or symptoms of Actos bladder cancer may include:

  • Blood in the Urine
  • Pain During Urination
  • Frequent Urination
  • Feeling of Need to Urinate Without Results
