Cipro
The Food and Drug Administration issued a safety warning on a class of drugs that include Cipro, made by Bayer, and Levaquin, made by Ortho-McNeil, due to evidence that the drugs could lead to tendon injuries.
Government agency ordered makers of fluoroquinolone to add a “black box” warning of tendon ruptures.
Most of the tendinitis and tendon ruptures affect the Achilles tendon, behind the ankle. But the agency has also received reports of tendinitis and ruptures in the shoulder and hand. Tendons connect muscle to bone.
Reports to the FDA included ruptures to the Achilles’ tendon and the rotator cuff. FDA officials stressed serious injury may be avoided if the patient stops the drug at the first sign of tendon pain or swelling and switch antibiotics.
Patients taking the drug should tell their doctors immediately if they are experiencing soreness or inflammation in their muscles or tendons.
If you or a loved one took one of these antibiotics and suffered a tendon rupture, contact our the Strom Law Firm, LLC today for a free consultation with an defective drug attorney today.
