Evenflo Issues Child Seat Recall

Evenflo Child Seat Recall Covers 35 Models

child seat recallChild seat manufacturer Evenflo has issued a product recall for 35 models of their child safety seats, because the restraints can be difficult to remove. In the event of a car accident, this could cause serious personal injury or death.

The child seat recall affects 202,000 individual child seats, manufactured at various times between December 2011 and May 2013. The affected lot numbers are: 30711365, 31511040, 31511323, 31511400, 3151198, 3151953, 31521138, 46811205, 46811237, 48111200, 48111215, 48111215A, 48111218, 48111234, 48111235, 48111235A, 48111462, 48411391, 48411391D, 48411392, 48411504, 48411504D, 52911307A, 52921040, 55311138, 55311238, and 55311292.

Consumers can find the model number on the back of the seat. As part of the child seat recall, consumers can contact Evenflo for a kit to repair the seat and replace the faulty buckles.

The child seat recall started after an investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which found the seat belt buckles to be difficult to unlatch, which could cause problems in extreme situations.

Child Seat Regulation

When you are expecting a child, purchasing a child safety seat is one of the most important decisions to consider.  There are a variety of options to choose from, and although protecting your child is foremost in your mind, he or she may not be as safe in the back seat of your vehicle as you think.

The federal government mandated an attachment system, known as LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) to be put in place after inspections found child-safety seats were frequently installed incorrectly.

A 2004 report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that belt buckles and other seat hardware could get in the way of the child seat connectors, and that the anchors could become buried in the seat and therefore be out of reach. Consistent problems with belts and buckles on child safety seats can lead to product recalls to improve safety conditions for children; however, manufacturers are consistently on the defensive regarding their products, sometimes compromising child safety for profit margins.
