A two year old boy is still recovering after he was attacked by a 70-pound pit bull.
The incident took place in Sumter, South Carolina.
Police say the boy, rode his tricycle into the yard where the dog was chained up. Then the dog attacked and caused the boy to suffer serious injuries including head trauma.
“This is the worst thing that could happen to anybody, especially a mother,” the boy’s mother told reporters.
She says her son is in stable condition, but will eventually need cosmetic surgery to recover from the injuries.
“You can’t even imagine, you can’t even imagine unless you have a child of your own,” she said.
During the attack the mother said her son lost both of his ears.
“They were gone, the police couldn’t find them [the ears], nobody could find the ears, that must mean the dog must have ate them because they could not be found,” she said.
The boy now has a tube in his body to give him hearing in one ear. He will fly to a burn center in Cincinnati to have reconstruction surgery.
Last year there were five million dog bites in the United States. One fifth of those required medical attention. So how do you avoid getting bitten by a dog?
The humane society advises:
- never approach an unfamiliar dog, especially one who is tied up.
- do not turn your back to a dog and run away. A dog”s natural instinct is to chase you.
- do not disturb a dog while they are sleeping, eating, chewing on a toy, or caring for other puppies. It is impossible to know how the dogwill react.
